More about Nevada’s PAL program.

What is NV PAL?

The Nevada Pediatric Access Line (NV PAL) program is a free service that makes child & adolescent psychiatry consultation immediately available to any primary care providers (PCPs) in Nevada, regardless of the patient’s resources or where they live. (Eligibility requirements: Patient must be a Nevada resident between the ages of 0-25 years old.)

Hundreds of PCPs throughout Nevada utilize NV PAL to help their child and adolescent patients with behavioral health needs get the specialized care they need from their primary care medical home.

How does NV PAL work?

We strive to make NV PAL as simple and frictionless as possible for PCPs. Once a PCP has signed up, here’s how they can use the program:

1. Call

PCP’s call is answered by our care coordinator. They will ask for demographic data and the reason for the call (brief clinical).

2. Coordinate

PCP and care coordinator will collaboratively assess whether to immediately involve CAP or schedule later consultation.

3. Consult

PCP and CAP discuss the case. CAP creates care recommendations communicated via care coordinator, who then facilitates aftercare needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who Administers NV PAL?

NV PAL is staffed collaboratively with child and adolescent psychiatry attendings, fellows, and care coordinators through UNLV.

Our team is excited to offer consultation and training to you (our primary care provider partners) to help you manage the mental health concerns of your patients and families — all while maintaining their care within your medical home.

How long do I have to wait to talk to a CAP?

NV PAL is staffed by child & adolescent psychiatry 9-5, Monday through Friday. When you call, you and the care coordinator will briefly discuss the reason for the call and decide if: a) the call is of an urgent nature, such that the CAP will be immediately transferred to the line; b) the call can be returned within 30 minutes; c) you'd like to schedule a call back. Primary care clinicians have busy schedules, and we've found that our partners often like to schedule call-backs around lunch time and/or the end of the clinic day.

Can I call NV PAL to help with a mental health crisis?

NV PAL is NOT a crisis line. If you live in NV and are experiencing a mental/behavioral health crisis in a youth, contact the Mobile Crisis team at https://www.knowcrisis.com/ or call 911. NV PAL provides child and adolescent psychiatry consultation to primary care providers in NV and is not a crisis line.

I’m a pediatrician in NV. Can I just call the line and talk to a child & adolescent psychiatrist?

Clinicians must enroll in the program prior to utilizing our services. Enrollment is a brief, online process (you can join NV PAL here). Once you are enrolled, you can access NV PAL services Monday through Friday, 9am-5pm PST.

My patient needs to see a psychiatrist. Can I contact NV PAL to get them seen?

No. NV PAL is a child psychiatrist to PCP consultative service, designed to support the PCP in managing the care for their patients within the primary care medical home. At this time, NV PAL does not provide direct patient care services.
